Aquariums in Europe - Spain (Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza)

Arapaima collection in River Aquarium - Zaragoza:

The Barcelona aquarium

is extremely overrated: pretty small, crowded and expensive.
They do have a few beautiful species - lionfish, jellyfish, cuttlefish - not often seen in aquariums, but compared to other aquariums from Europe is vastly inferior.

Valencia's L'Oceanografic

is expensive, but well worth the money.  It is very large, well organized, you can spend a whole day there, and also includes a dolphin show.  There are also exhibitions of birds, butterflies and other animals, very spacious aquariums and experts explaining different things.
It is situated in the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias area, a modern and very interesting complex, one of Valencia's tourist attractions.

The Zaragoza aquarium (River Aquarium)

was a very pleasant surprise, since I didn't expect to see so many interesting and spectacular freshwater species.
It is very nicely organized, with ideal light in the aquariums, not crowded, and the (very large) Arapaima collection is extraordinary!
The aquarium is located in the Expo Zaragoza 2008 park, on the outskirts of the city; the tourist bus is very convenient and includes the entrance fee to the aquarium as well as the trip to it.
